Krokus Gallery presents a solo exhibition of Slovak artist Lucia Dovičáková titled All the Reason to be happy are close at hand. The exhibition will show a selection of works (paintings, drawings and water-colours) from the past two years. Lucia Dovičáková's works in the last decade have shaped up essential motives related mostly with a woman’s everydayness such as housework, care about one self and one’s body, human relations, couple dynamics and “battle of sexes". After birth of her child three years ago, yet another very bold and vivid motive of motherhood appeared in her works. The motive was processed and presented within her preceding solo exhibitions in the Bratislava City Gallery (2014) and plusmínusnula Gallery in Žilina (2015).
Besides motherhood, the newest show in Krokus Gallery will expose Lucia Dovičáková returning to self-portraiture. The artist's current portraits such as painting Nightmare (2015) are a portrayal of her innermost feelings. Dovičáková paints what is closest to her, and as such, she reaches out to the viewers, since they are able to find a link in her often simple, yet striking visual formations. What contributes to this interaction is her tendency towards the grotesque as well as brazen and anti-academic painting.
The title of the exhibition is a paraphrase of Virginia Woolf's short story New Dress. “Why not be original? Why not be herself?" asks the main protagonist of the story. Dovičáková does not offer answers to such elementary questions, her authentic visuality only shows that finding and keeping happiness in the era of exhausted capitalism and perpetual self-optimalisation (with the assistance of media and social networks) is a substantial and extremely hard task.
